The Population Biology and genomics Group



The Population Biology and Genomics Group is focussed on the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of populations. We develop new theory and analytical tools to support the management of important populations across environment, agriculture, and health sectors. We apply population biology to problems in biosecurity and conservation, working with government and industry stakeholders to solve emergent biosecurity problems, and to improve future preparedness.



Established in July 2023 under the Western Australian Government Premier’s Science Fellowship Program, the Population Biology and Genomics Group is a new and rapidly growing research group in the School of Molecular and Life Sciences at Curtin University.


Your new role



You will lead modelling work on the containment and eradication of pest species. The work will involve a combination of simulation and statistical modelling. 



Your key responsibilities will be:


  1. Develop and theoretically test new methods that utilise self-disseminating biotechnology for population containment and eradication

  2. Develop and ground-truth a general tool for estimating the cost and feasibility of eradication

  3. Assist with the supervision and development of graduate student projects

We are looking for someone with the following key capabilities:


  • A PhD in a relevant field

  • Demonstrated experience developing spatially-explicit population models

  • Demonstrated experience in statistical inference

  • Knowledge of processes and theory in population genetics

  • Demonstrated track record in research publication

  • Demonstrated experience with data and code management

You will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role. Only in limited situations will visa sponsorship situations be considered.
