  • A PhD in sociology, anthropology, humanities, social work, counselling, psychology, medicine, nursing, public health, science and technology studies, or a closely related discipline;

  • Advanced qualitative research methods skills and experience;

  • Experience in undertaking sensitive research;

  • An emerging research profile evidenced by high-quality peer-reviewed research;

  • Demonstrated project management experience;

  • Skills and experience in working with qualitative data;

  • Demonstrated capacity for engagement with social science/sociological concepts and theory; 

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a team;

  • Capacity to succeed in a fast-paced research-intensive environment; and

  • Sound written, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills suitable to collaborating in an academic context.

Offering a base salary of $100,717 (Level A) to $134,403 (Level B) plus leave loading and generous employer’s contribution to superannuation About the opportunity The Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies (SCHS) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Level A), or Research Fellow (Level B), to join our team, under the guidance of the Centre Directors, Professor Alex Broom, Dr Katherine Kenny, and Associate Professor Nadine Ehlers, as well as a dynamic core team of social science researchers. Your work will focus on a new Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project entitled: The Social Life of Death, and will investigate experiences of death, dying and bereavement amidst rapid social, economic and political transformation. This is a collaborative study with families, persons who are dying and a spectrum of health professionals, to generate new knowledge that will better inform and improve experiences at the end of life, professional practices, national policy, and spark cultural renewal around death and dying. Key responsibilities of this role include: Qualitative fieldwork (local and interstate), including in-depth qualitative interviews, solicited diaries and photo elicitation, with people who are dying and/or their families, and caring professionals; Writing, leading and co-publishing academic papers with Centre members; Leading qualitative data analysis including submission of co-authored journal articles outlets; Taking responsibility for the day-to-day logistics of carrying out research; Working with research assistants to develop ethics submissions and satisfy reporting requirements; and Furthering the vision and objectives of the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
