This doctoral research project will focus on 1) functional characterisation of Tps systems in Ralstonia and 2) the ecological and evolutionary consequences of recombination at Tps loci.
The PhD student will contribute to the functional characterisation of Tps loci in Ralstonia by assisting in the identification of Tps systems mediating host-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions. The PhD researcher will use tools in microbiology, genetics, molecular biology and microscopy to assess Tps function in vitro and in planta. For the second goal of their PhD, the student will experimentally quantify the frequency of recombination at Tps loci in evolving Ralstonia populations, and examine how recombination alters interactions between competing strains. In addition to microbiology and microbial genetics methods, the student will use experimental evolution and genomics to address their research questions.
